As the Factory's house band, the VU's line-up changed many times. John Cale and Nico not withstanding. In 1969, they were still 'The Velvet Underground', whether John Cale was in the line-up or not is purely academic. He wasn't in the line-up for their eponymous 1968 album. But it is still a definitive and classic VU album.

I dearly love all the music created by the Velvet Underground in it's various incarnations, but without Cale the music feels less group oriented and more Lou Reed driven, also the replacement bassists were a weak substitution for Cale's abilities not to mention his viola playing, keyboard skills and composition contributions. It's sort of like comparing 68'-74' era Dead to say 76' Dead, while the 76' Dead at times can be fantastic it is never quite as good as the real deal 68'-74' band.Of course as always it really is just a matter of one's preference.

@jerlouvis: Very true: It's just different that's all. However, I agree that Cale certainly added something unique to the Velvets, that's for certain. I guess by the same token one could describe the Beatles circa Abbey Road / Let It Be as Macca's band. ;)

In full agreement and point well taken on the Beatles.

"...while the 76' Dead at times can be fantastic it is never quite as good as the real deal 68'-74' band..."

This IS just a plain old FACT, eh? No need to qualify that at all...

;)

Without a shadow of a doubt it is a fact as far as I am concerned, and since this a GD forum I assumed those sentiments needed no further explanation whether someone agreed with them or not, secondly it was just a device to make a point in VU thread and lastly I figured saying "of course as always it really is just a matter of one's preference",would satisfy having an opinion. WT,I did not notice the smiley face at the bottom of your post until well after I responded as I was re-reading my response because I thought it might have seemed harsh,so I would like to apologize if you took offense because you are one of the nicest and least judgmental people here on this forum, which should have tipped me off to question and look at your post more closely.

He may be nice and less judgmental, but he's old, senile, and his knees give out when he goes to the post... and he only shows up in the playoffs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2A194yTWoQ

No sweat; thx for taking the time, but no offense taken at all...just tongue in cheek there.

I hope all is well with you and yours Billy T, and that you are avoiding the storms over on your side of the Atlantic.
